Abstract
Objective: To identify the strengths and weaknesses of primary care pediatric nurses when providing culturally congruent care during the introduction of complementary feeding, following the principles of Madeleine Leininger’s transcultural model.
Methodology: A qualitative phenomenological study was conducted in which semi-structured interviews with three pediatric nurses from health centers belonging to the Organización Sanitaria Integrada Bilbao-Basurto, Spain.
Results: The interviews revealed that the nurses possessed a sound understanding of cultural care, effectively reflecting Madeleine Leininger’s conceptualization of the term. Among the strengths identified were active listening skills, respect for the family’s culture, and the ability to question their own preconceptions as well as seek information and training. Weaknesses were mainly related to the healthcare organization, particularly due to a lack of resources and insufficient training in certain areas among the nurses themselves.
Conclusion: In general, primary care pediatric nurses were perceived as having notable strengths. However, the most significant weakness identified related to organizational limitations. Therefore, it is recommended that the administration allocate resources to updating protocols and providing ongoing professional development.
