Abstract

Objective: To unveil any lifestyle changes that may have occurred during the lockdown period in Spain from March to September 2020. Then, identify their possible impact on T2DM patients in the Health Zones of Ponferrada II and Ponferrada III.

Methodology: A comparative retrospective study was carried out in the two Health Zones within the Health Area of El Bierzo. Said study was conducted on a sample of T2DM patients coming to the hospital for medical follow-up. Changes in metabolic control were measured by testing the levels of glycosylated hemoglobin both immediately before and after the period of study (dependent variable). Investigations were made regarding the relationship between this value and independent variables related to changes in lifestyle.

Results: No statistically relevant differences were found in the levels of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Additionally, there was no statistical evidence either that could associate this value with changes in lifestyle. Nonetheless, one of the Health Centres in this study showed a trend of higher HbA1c levels in patients who reported not having felt supported by the healthcare team.

Conclusions: A decrease in exercise frequency and a sense of fear were the two main factors that affected the lifestyle of patients with T2DM in the area. However, no significant changes were observed in their metabolic control during the period of study.
