Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the knowledge, habits, and attitudes related to oral health in a municipality in Girona, identifying the perceived assets in oral health within the community.

Methodology: A qualitative study was conducted with five focus groups comprising family members, selecting participants through intentional sampling that prioritized the inclusion of family associations as representative spaces. Additionally, individuals with experience in community projects and services were included, taking into account the social and cultural diversity of the municipality. The analysis was performed using a thematic approach to the content of the groups.

Results: The analysis revealed four general themes related to the knowledge, habits, and attitudes regarding oral health in the municipality of Salt: (a) prior knowledge of oral health issues; (b) habits and attitudes related to oral health; (c) assets and resources concerning oral health; and (d) proposals for improvement.

Conclusions: Most participants demonstrated a basic understanding of dental caries but lacked awareness of hidden sugars in foods. While many reported maintaining regular brushing practices, significant differences were observed among ethnic and socioeconomic groups, along with a lack of parental supervision in children's brushing. Primary dental care services were recognized as key resources, although their utilization was low. Suggested improvements included education in schools, awareness campaigns, and community collaboration to promote healthy habits.
